Hot Dog Omelet Recipe
My mother invented the Hot Dog Omelet for me when I was a kid, and I’ve adapted the recipe to be healthier and less bad for me. The idea of a hot dog omelet is great for kids–I mean, it was invented for one!–but it’s also delicious and easy to make for adults.
I don’t eat a lot of meat so I use some vegan ingredients, but animal protein is fine too. The hot dog omelet is also a great carrier for ketchup–important for those who consider the condiment to be the most important aspect of a meal!
Ingredients
- 1 small potato
- 1 hot dog. I use Field Roast vegan ones but any hot dog will do.
- 2 eggs or egg substitute
- ¼ cup cheese, a slice or grated. Vegan cheese and dairy cheese are both fine.
- Butter or olive oil if not using a non-stick pan
- Salt and pepper
You’ll need a sharp knife, cutting board, mixing bowl, whisk or fork, frying pan
Instructions
- Thinly slice the potato (~2 cm)
- Slice the hot dog (~4 cm)
- Scramble the eggs and add salt and pepper
- Heat the frying pan
- Add olive oil or melted butter to coat
- Add the potato and hot dog slices to the pan and heat for 4 minutes or until light brown
- Flip and cook for 4 more minutes
- Make sure the potatoes and hot dog slices are well distributed
- Add scrambled egg mixture and spread
- Cook for ~5 minutes until the bottom of the egg mixture is browned and holds together
- Flip the omelet
- Add cheese to one half of the omelet surface and fold over to cover
- Cook for 3 minutes and flip
- The omelet is done when the cheese has melted.
- Plate the omelet and slather in ketchup!
